Portable Changing Rooms: Sizing for a Full Squad
Size a changing room by bench length and hook count, not by floor area. A room that looks big on paper is useless if twenty people cannot sit down at once, and that is the failure everybody discovers on a match day rather than in the brochure.
Start with bench metres
Allow a comfortable seated width per person and run the benches along the walls. A full squad plus staff arriving together is the number that matters — not the average attendance, the worst case. Count the people who will be in the room at the same moment and work back from there.
Hooks and kit space
One hook per person is the minimum and it is rarely enough, because bags end up on the floor and the floor is where people walk. Two hooks per place, or a hook and a shelf, keeps the room usable. Kit on the ground in a wet changing room is a trip hazard and a laundry problem.
Two rooms or one
Clubs running men's and women's teams, or home and away on the same afternoon, need separate rooms. That is either a partitioned unit or two linked buildings. Partitioning can be done during refurbishment, so if a listed open unit is the right size, it can go out divided.
Showers and toilets
Changing rooms are usually specified alongside showers and toilets. Shower fit-out is a mixture: some units go out with new showers installed, others are refurbished, and the listing tells you which. Drainage varies too — some run to mains, others to a holding tank — so the site dictates a good deal of this.
Floor and finish
Wet feet and studs are hard on a floor. Look for a surface that takes water and cleans easily, and check the condition around the doorway where the wear concentrates. Refurbished units are repaired and refitted, electrically tested and certified, then repainted in your choice of colour before sale.
Getting it on site
Our own HIAB fleet lifts and sets each unit into position, and units link side by side or stack with stairs fitted. We need hard standing to work from — the lorries do not go on grass — so the access route and the standing position are worth settling early.
