Site Security Over Winter: Locking Down an Empty Site

Steel anti-vandal cabin shuttered and locked

From November onwards a site is dark for most of the hours it is empty, and that changes the risk. The fixes are mostly free: where the building sits, what is left inside it, and whether it is properly shut up rather than just locked.

Position the unit where it can be seen

A cabin tucked behind a spoil heap is a cabin nobody can see from the road. Where the layout allows, put it in the open with clear sight lines from a public frontage or a neighbouring occupied building. It is the cheapest security measure available and it is decided on delivery day, so decide it before the lorry arrives.

Shut it up properly

Shutters down and locked, not just pulled. Doors locked on the deadlock rather than the latch. Blinds closed so nobody can window-shop the inside. On a steel anti-vandal unit this takes two minutes at the end of a shift and removes the easy options entirely.

Take the obvious things home

Laptops, small tools, anything with a resale value. An empty building that clearly contains nothing is far less interesting than one with a cable and a monitor visible through the glass. If tools have to stay, a separate steel store keeps them away from the office.

Light it

A lit unit reads as occupied. Even a low-cost light on a sensor near the door changes how the building looks from the perimeter after dark. Pair it with the heating running on a low setting and the unit looks and behaves like somewhere people are coming back to.

Think about what a break-in actually costs

The stolen items are usually the smaller number. The real cost is a forced door, a broken window, a day lost and a team standing around. That arithmetic is why exposed sites tend to end up with steel buildings — not because the theft risk is dramatic, but because the disruption is.

Before a long shutdown

If the site closes for a fortnight or more, drop the water, leave the heating on a frost setting, empty the fridge, remove anything valuable and photograph the unit as you leave it. A dated photo is worth having if anything does happen.

If the site is exposed and the current building is not up to it, anti-vandal units and security cabins are both worth a look. Tell us the site and we will be straight with you about what it needs.
