Drying Rooms: Keeping Wet Workwear Off the Canteen Floor
A drying room does one job: it gets wet workwear off people and out of the space where they eat. On a winter job it is the difference between a canteen that stays usable and one that smells of wet coats by Wednesday.
What is in one
Hanging rails and hooks, bench seating for changing boots, and heat. The rails need enough run for a full crew's coats and overalls with air between them — packed together, nothing dries. Benches matter more than people expect, because boots come off standing up otherwise and that is how mud ends up everywhere.
Heat and airflow together
Heat alone does not dry a room. Warm, wet air has to go somewhere, so ventilation is half the job. Our drying rooms are fitted with heaters — new heaters in most cases — and you want to run them with a vent open rather than sealed tight. A sealed, heated room full of wet clothing turns into condensation on every surface.
Sizing it
Work on rail length per person rather than floor area. Count your maximum headcount, allow a generous arm's width per set of workwear, and add a margin — the wettest weeks are exactly when everyone uses it at once. Undersized drying rooms do not half-work, they stop working.
Where to put it
Next to the welfare unit but not inside it. The point is separation: people arrive, change and hang up, then go into the canteen dry. Putting the rails along one wall of the mess room saves a building and costs you the mess room.
Drying room or welfare unit?
A self-contained welfare unit that includes a drying area works well for a small crew on a short job. Once you are into double figures, or the work is genuinely wet, a dedicated building pays for itself in how much longer the canteen stays pleasant.
What to check
Ask about the heaters, the ventilation, and what the electrics have been tested to. Refurbished units are repaired and refitted, electrically tested and certified, then repainted before sale, and a few go out as they stand — the listing tells you which.
Browse drying rooms or pair one with a canteen unit. Layouts can be changed during refurbishment, so if you want more rail and fewer benches, say so and we will build it that way.
